Booyeembara Mountain Bike Trails
Concept, design and construction of Western Australia’s first micro urban mountain bike park.
Opened in May 2023, the Booyeembara Mountain Bike Trails are the first of their kind in Western Australia. Featuring two 400m gravity jump trails and a pump track, the ground-breaking micro urban mountain bike park serves as a remarkable example of what can be achieved in urban spaces across Australia.
Concept and Design
In 2020 Three Chillies Design were engaged by the City of Fremantle to develop a concept design for mountain bike trails in a tight and underutilised finger of land on the remediated Booyeembara Park. The City had been working with local community group, Fremantle Mountain Bike Collective, to formalise unsanctioned trails built by local youths.
The concept identified where two downhill trails could be constructed, a Blue Moderate and a Black Advanced trail both with a length of about 400m, as well as a pump track for all riders. Due to site contamination, there was a need to cap and fill prior to construction of the new trails. With additional funding for the remediation works secured, detailed design kicked off in late 2022. There was also a strong focus on sustainable outcomes during the Detailed Design phase of the project, with recycled materials, retention of mature trees and protection of habitat some of the key considerations.
Jump Lines
The blue trail is a fast and flowy jump line for intermediate riders, with large tabletops, shark fins and hip jumps. The black jump line is not for the faint-hearted, and features a wooden wall ride, step ups, step downs, wood and steel drops and large tabletops. The trails were constructed from over 10 000 cubic metres of recycled fill, crushed concrete, and demolition materials. Key features were surfaced with our PolyPave product, achieving a firm, stable and durable surface.
Pump Track
A pump track was constructed in the park, providing a fun, safe environment for riders to refine their pumping and jumping before progressing to the more challenging jumplines. The tracks unique figure-of-eight design provides riders with a multitude of line choices, allowing for a diverse riding experience. To ensure long-lasting stability and durability, the track has been expertly surfaced with PolyPave.
Wall Ride
Immediately after dropping into the black jump line riders are greeted by a large wall ride, setting the tone for the rest of the trail. We set our designers and fabricators loose on this one and you can see the results. Steel beams jutting out from the ground with timber as the ride surface. This wall ride is as to ride as it is aesthetically pleasing. Major progression has been built into this feature, with the option to ride it higher and higher until the rider is jumping out of the end and landing on the backside of the roller.
Step On/Step Off Platform
Halfway down the black jump line looms an impressive step on/step off feature. A large concrete lip allows riders to jump onto the platform, before dropping off the other side back onto the trail.
These sturdy wood and steel structures, along with a number of other structures, were designed and fabricated in-house by our expert welders, before being transported and installed onsite.
Despite being a challenging job due to tight time restraints and tricky site access, it’s one of the jobs I’ve been most proud to lead and complete! I had to call on all my trail building and construction experience and then some, but the final product that myself and the exceptional team produced is one I’m very proud of and a facility that is truly world leading!
I’m stoked that inner suburb kids don’t have to trek all the way to the hills to ride their bikes, and hope to see this idea take off in other suburbs on small hills around Perth Metro!
